Thank You Veterans

Dear Veterans,
Thank you so much for fighting for your country. Many people didn't agree with the war but you men still went there and fought long and hard. Today it's really hard to say why the was going on. But you guys fought for your country, your family and all the men in line with you. Today none of the people that died can be brought back but we thank you dearly for your involvement and courageousness.
From,
Nicole

Hope to Learn

In this unit I hope to be able to understand a little more about the wars that many people dont talk about like WWI and WWII. The Korean War and the Vietnam War are two of the wars that are not often forgot but often not talked about like the larger wars.

Times of Change- Farmer, Massacre, A Nun

What do these two poems and the article say about the impact of the war on the native Vietnamese? Can you think of any other ways in which the war will impact the native Vietnamese?

The poems and the article show how bad it really was to be a native in Vietnam. Almost all of the people killed were civilians and some calling it murder as being premiditated. They killed the people that didn't die right away with there guns. One man though saved a little boy and took him to an orphanage. The war took most of there homes, land, money and probably just about everything that meant something to them. It took away most families also.

Times of Change- I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die Rag

What is the song asking the "big strong men to do"?
to put down the books and get a gun or join the army
.....the generals to do?
kill the communists
.....Wall Street to do?
make money for the army
.....mother to do?
send their boys to war

Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or ani-war sentiment.

1. "What are we fighting for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn."
2. "Whoopee! We're all gonna die."
3. "We're gonna have a whole lotta fun."
4. "Be the first one on the block to have your boy come home in a box."

Times of Change- Jack Smith

What challenges does Jack Smith face as a solider in Vietnam?
-everyone is inexperienced
-making base camp and clearing space in jungle
-getting ambushed
-its just if u live or die
-watching people you know get killed
-noise all around you of everything

How does Smith's attitude toward war change?
At first he didn't think it was serious. But in the end he found that it wasn't time to goof around but time to protect the people you love and the country you love. He knew that the death of his friends couldn't be justified.

Times of Change- The Gulf of Tonkin Rosolution

What is the main thesis of the essay?
It was based on a lie.
What was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution?
The congressional approval for Johnson to defend the US beliefs in the area.
What evidence does the author give to support his thesis?
No evidence that there had been a shot fired. There was no damage after the incident. Many say Johnson invented the whole thing to get Congress to support fighting in Vietnam.
How does this link to the theme of the first reading?
It's another way of saying how entering the war was doubtful for the US.

Times of Change- History

What is the overall theme of Vuong-Riddick's poem?
The theme is the death of Vietnam and that Vietnam is always dealing with other countries like the US, France, USSR and China.

Times Have Changed - A Dubious Crusade

Look up both words in the title of the short essay. What do they mean?
Dubious = doubtful
Crusade= aggressive movement for the defense or advancement of an idea
Relate the title to the reading. What is Warren saying? How do you think this will relate to the rest of our study if Vietnam?
Warren is saying that the US entering the war is doubtful because the American Public didn't support. The American Public didn't trust its government. I think the rest of the unit will talk about how the US should or shouldn't have dealt with Vietnam the way they did.

Korean War

10 Important things:

In 1945, the USSR occupied Korea north of the 38th parallel. American forces controlled land south of this line.

June 1950, North Korea invades South Korea. This is known as the Korean War.

President Truman saw this as a test for his communist containment policy.

US forces as well as forces from other UN nations go to Korea under the command of General Douglas MacArthur.

In the early part of the war, the North Koreans push the South Koreans almost all the way to the south of the peninsula.

General MacAurthur decides to land troops on Lnchon. The North Koreans were surrounded, and are forced to go back to where they started.

MacArthur started to chase them almost all the way to China.

China sees this as a threat and invades on November 25th, 1950. They drive the UN back to the 38th parallel.

General MacArthur wanted to blockade Chinas coastline and bomb China, but Truman said no.

Truman thought that would lead to the USSR entering the war.

Realized- Labor

Now in American society some good things that are now happening is that all races equally participating in the civil labor force. The unemployment rate for women and men are basically equal so that's not good about unemployment but its good that there equal.

Now in American society a bad thing that is happening is that
women are participating less than men in the civil labor force. Another bad thing is that the unemployment rate is way higher for blacks and Hispanics. therefore saying that there are less jobs that are offered to black people then Hispanic people.

Some ways to improve American is to include women more in the civil labor force by hiring more women into jobs that men would "normally" take. We can fix the unemployment rates by offering more jobs to everybody. Offering more jobs would get more people off the streets, but we have to offer them to everybody.

MLK Question and Answer

Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?

Yes, the author feels that whites owe King the greatest debt because without Martin Luther King Jr. America could not call itself the free world today, and it is beneficial to not have segregation today.

Was King "the right man at the right time"?

He was the right man at the perfect time and because of his peace the marches were successful and he was looked at by many people for achieving something that he believed in without directly hurting or intending to kill anyone.

Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?

He wouldn't like some of the reasons it's being used.

Civil Disobedience

Would you have been able to use civil disobedience and non-violence?

No, I think it take a lot of seft control to use non-violence. Self-control is a hard thing. I'd deffinatly want to be able to but it's so hard I don't think I could do it. The end result isnt a possitive thing so going though all they had to go through at the time. It would be hard for me to just sit there and take what was happening to me. As you get older your amount of self control is increased so maybe as an adult I'd be about to do it. But not as a 14 year old. I support all of the people that are able to have civil disobedience. What was happening was very unjust and the many people that sat there and worked hard to not use there fists but there heads are smart. It was pretty unbeleivable what was happening but I have a lot of respect for them.

FDR’s New Deal developed an economy that has prospered and developed into the nation it is today. When FDR made the New Deal the United States was in the middle of the Depression, so FDR made a series of laws to help out the economy. He started by the 100 days, in those 100 days he thought of ways to help the economy. He came up with tons of groups to help the economy. Like the AAA, to help the farmers and the CCC to give men work building things like bridges, schools and series of buildings. Today we still have things like these, charities and people hired to help people find jobs. He also increases the arts and made people realize about it. Social Security is also still around today and all of America counts on it.
